Video: Daily Stretches – Toes!

I never even thought about stretching my toes until I needed to! A part of me wonders if I had started stretching them earlier, if that would have prevented my trigger toe (I have no idea if that would have been the case). Regardless, I love stretches, so here are some that were given to me by physiotherapists and chiropractors. Let’s keep making the most of it!

Always seek medical advice from appropriate healthcare professionals and never start a new routine without consulting with your doctor.

Video: Daily Yoga – Sphinx Pose

This week we’re exploring one of my favourite yoga poses. I find it to be a great stretch for my back as well as my chest as it acts as a back bend and chest opener. Make sure to check with your healthcare team before doing any new exercise routines. The information in the video is based solely on my experiences. Stretches can be great for pain that is muscular – check out this podcast interview with Dr. Yass about muscular pain. As always, keep making the most of it!

Video: Daily Yoga – Chest Openers

Chest openers are among my favourite yoga poses because I am always tight in my chest, really noticing it under the shoulders, near my armpits. And I always feel good during this stretch. Stretching is super important when managing chronic pain, and something most of us don’t do enough of, which is another reason I’ve incorporated yin yoga into my daily routine. Please consult with your healthcare team before starting any new exercise routines. I am not a professional yoga teacher, just giving your some education on what has worked well for me! Yoga is also a great way to contact the preent moment, which is the topic of this week’s podcast episode, avaiable here.

Alright everyone, for now, take care and keep making the most of it!

Daily Stretches: Shoulders

This week I decided to share with you some stretches that I like for my shoulders (that also give a bit of a stretch in the upper back and biceps). Stretching is so important, so I encourage you all to incorporate more of it into your lives. As always, please consult with your healthcare professionals to ensure you are doing stretches properly and safely.

Take care and keep making the most of it!

Daily Yoga: Hip Openers

This week we’re doing some more yoga postures that I absolutely love for the hips: reclined butterfly and a butterfly forward fold. I find they help with a nice stretch in my hips, which is something I need. As always, please consult with your healthcare team before making any lifestyle changes, such as adding yoga. If you already do yoga, I’d love to hear if you like these poses or what poses you do. Until next week, keep making the most of it everyone!

Daily Stretches: Yoga for Low Back

These are two of my favourite yin yoga poses for low back. There are particularly helpful if you have low back pain or if you feel any tightness in that area. I have found that movement, including yoga, has been extremely helpful for my chronic pain.

Keep making the most of it everyone!

Daily Mindfulness: Mindful Stretching

This mindful stretching exercise is from Marsha Linehan’s Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Training Manual. The point is to focus on your breath and movement while doing a stretch that allows you to “reach for the stars.” Mindfulness can be done in many ways, and stretching (and yoga) is one of them! If you’re having trouble with mindfulness meditation, I suggest starting with these types of practices first. There are two versions in the video, one standing and the other sitting so this is accessible to everyone!

For more on the benefits of stretching, check out my podcast episode with Danielle Potvin here. And for more on the benefits of mindfulness for health, check out that episode here. Until next week, keep making the most of it!

Daily Stretches: Chair Yoga

Back after my hip surgery I wanted to continue to do yoga but had to be very careful. (Technically I still have to be careful, just not as). So I found chair yoga on YouTube and thought it was great for people with limited mobility. I modified a lot at the time, so I suggest if you’re going to try these out, you can modify so it’s safe for you to do depending on your needs. I’m a big fan of yoga practices because it has so many health benefits. Yoga falls into the category of mindfulness. You can check out my podcast on that topic here.

The YouTube channels I like for chair yoga are: Happy Yoga and Toronto Rehab.

Enjoy your yoga today and keep on making the most of it!

Daily Stretches: Upper Body

Okay, I think we’ve now covered all the different body regions when it comes to stretching. That doesn’t mean there won’t be more stretching videos though (assuming everyone reading/watching wants more!) so don’t worry. On that note, if you’d like to see more stretching videos, please leave a comment! And if there’s anything specific you’re requesting let me know that too! I’ve also done some amazing podcast episodes that are relevant here: “Exercise for Chronic Pain with Dr. Frank Nhan,” “Pelvic Floor Physio with Queenie Woo,” “The Essentials to Health with Dr. Stephan Bohemier,” “How Stress and Anxiety Manifest in the Body with Dr. Alex Triendl,” and “Massage Therapy for Chronic Pain with Danielle Potvin.” Head over to the “Podcast” page to get access or check out – Chronically Living and how to make the most of it – wherever you get your podcasts!

Daily Stretches: Back

I hope you’re enjoying the “stretch” series. This week we’re doing stretches for our back. I’ve added two more in addition to the cat cow. As always, please consult with your own professionals if you are unsure of how to do the stretches or don’t know if you should be. These were given to me by current and former physiotherapists and chiropractors. I personally find them to help alleviate some of my back pain. Enjoy! And let me know in the comments if you have some of your own favourite back stretches!
